Obituary for Gregory Randall (Randy) Makasoff

Gregory Randall Makasoff also known as Randy, of Swan River, Manitoba, aged 61 years, passed away on August 23rd, 2016, at the Swan River Hospital.

Randy was born August 24th, 1954 in the R.M. of Swan River, Manitoba, to Walter and Leona Makasoff.

He received his education at Thunderbird School, then at Arran Saskatchewan. He resided at the family farm in the R.M. of Livingston until 1980 and then moved to Benito, MB.

He met Colleen Stenberg in 1974 and in 1976 Randy’s first son, Scott Stenberg, was born. Randy married Linda Piche on December 24th, 1987 and although they chose to live separately later on in their life together Linda and Randy remained dear friends to one another.  Randy and Linda lived in Benito, MB, Northern Manitoba, and in various locations in Saskatchewan. They raised three children together; Jennifer, Michael and Paula.

Randy took on various occupations early in his life such as; a farmer, working on the family farm, and for local farmers. He was also an Equipment Operator for CN in 1980. In 1988, Randy, Linda and their family moved to Snow Lake, MB where he worked in the mining industry for HBM&S for 5 years, then moved to Creighton, Saskatchewan where he also worked in the mining industry in Flin Flon for another year. For a time Randy gave diamond drilling a whirl which took him all the way to the Yukon where he had long time wanted to go.

Later in life he drove truck hauling logs and gravel for local companies. He enjoyed truck driving, and took pride in his job. He had a few close calls and stories that would make most people never get behind the wheel again but Randy kept at it and loved the challenges the roads had for him. He especially loved it when his kids would go for rides with him while he was on the road; he had some unforgettable stories to tell!

Randy had strong mechanical abilities; he would often be found somewhere in the yard fixing or repairing some kind of vehicle or small equipment. His brother Kelly once said Randy is the one who taught him how to fix almost anything. Randy enjoyed fixing things --- most of the time. You would know he was frustrated when a few loud choice words were being heard from the house!

Randy’s other hobbies included hunting, fishing, and doing almost anything outdoors including yardwork. It is with gratitude that the family has many a memorable story to tell about fishing adventures with Randy.

His other interests were watching hockey and wildlife shows. His favorite team were the Montreal Canadiens, and when they scored a goal, it sounded like you were really at the game the noise that came from the living room! Randy was also a fan of lucid cougar movies and he had mentioned that he would have liked to be a cougar hunter.

Randy is survived by: his four children, Scott (Holly) Stenberg, of Benito, MB, Jennifer (Mike) Allarie, of Swan River, MB, Michael Makasoff of Swan River, MB, and Paula Makasoff of Swan River, MB.; seven grandchildren, Brooke and Jasper Allarie, and Carson, Abbie, Bentley, Hailey and Jillian Stenberg; brothers Dwaine Makasoff of Benito MB, Kevin Makasoff of Benito MB, and Kelly Makasoff of Benito, MB as well as his nieces and nephews, Zack, Justin and Christina Makasoff, Karli and Kori Makasoff and Zack, Hilary, Kaley, Beth and Ruth Makasoff.

Randy was predeceased by: his Grandparents Zack and Pauline Makasoff, and Adolf and Ethel Sigurdson; his parents Walter and Leona Makasoff as well as numerous aunties, uncles, cousins and friends.

Randy will be missed dearly by his children, grandchildren, family and friends. His sense of humor and his ability to make everyone around him laugh are what he was known for and will always be remembered by everyone.

A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 pm on August 27th, 2016, at Paull’s Funeral Home in Swan River, Manitoba with Reverend Kevin Sprong officiating. Interment followed at Semenoka Cemetary (“Bear Head”).

Active Pallbearers were his children Scott, Jennifer, Michael, and Paula.

Honorary Pallbearers were his brothers Dwaine, Kevin, and Kelly Makasoff.

Should friends so desire, memorial donations in Randy’s honour may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Rest in Paradise Randy, your battle is over and may you find eternal peace.
