Orest Kereluk Obituary

Orest Kereluk of Swan River, passed away peacefully at the Swan Valley Hospital on May 3, 2019 at the age of 91 years. Orest was born in Canora, Saskatchewan to William and Mary Kereluk on March 31, 1928. Never married, most of Orest’ s life was spent on the family farm outside of Bowsman, MB.

Orest and his brother Pete took over the original family homestead in 1958, where they spent many years establishing a profitable business for themselves. Here, the boys’ raised cattle, farmed acres of land as a two-man operation, calling on their neighbors for help when needed.

In 2008, the boys made the hard decision to retire to town. Together they purchased their home in the center of town close to all the amendies to begin to enjoy the retired life together. The big transition was made easier as familiar faces were close by. Two doors down their older sister Olga and brother in law John had recently retired to town as well. The transition came with many benefits as it allowed the boys to enjoy more frequent pop-ins from “The girls” and their sister until her sudden passing in 2009. Later in 2010, they decided to sell the homestead and land to long time neighbors Lyle and Jocelyn Marchuk. To whom they knew the farm would be in good hands as “Lyle and his boy” took the reins.

Orest enjoyed reflecting on past years by hosting coffee and sweets at the house. Visits typically ended with the kitchen table covered in old memories hidden in chocolate boxes. Within the family, Orest was known as the record keeper. His ability to recalls dates of birthday, dates, or passing was immedicable; with often details right down to the weather that day.

In later years, as Pete’s health began to decline; Orest assumed the caregiver role for his partner in crime. Orest was strong willed and a decisive man. He made all his own choices clearly and effectually up until his passing, having a life well lived, and his job here on earth complete.

Orest is survived by his sister Vicki of Calgary, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a great-great niece Brynn Foster of Edmonton, AB to whom he especially enjoyed visits with.

Orest is predeceased by his parents; brothers Pete, Victor and Eddie; and sisters Olga, Grace, Lorraine, Anne, Helen; and nephew Blaine Kereluk.
