Victoria Woods Obituary

Vicki died peacefully on May 20, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Dauphin after a brief period of failing health. She was born in Winnipeg on July 26, 1923 to Alexandria and Nicholas Kischook, the seventh of nine children. She received her education at Carrick School #1639, near Makinak, Manitoba where she also had her first job opening the building and lighting the stove to warm it up for her fellow students. She was assisted by her younger sister, Ollie, for which they split the tidy sum of $6 per month.

In 1940 she married Albert, the love of her life, and they enjoyed nearly 72 years together that included a 5 year period of separation while Albert served overseas during World War 2. Together they purchased the farm from the CNR and lived for more than 50 years on the bank of the Woody River. In later years they lived in Swan River until Albert’s death when Vicki moved with Jan and Stan to live in Winnipeg. Although not what she had planned for in her later years, she met the adjustment with patience and her usual poise. It also gave her the opportunity to enjoy more frequent visits with family in the area.

Life on a mixed farm offered few opportunities to get away on a holiday. Vicki, being basically a homebody, was mostly unfazed by this fact. Later, when the opportunities arose, she did thoroughly enjoy the trips that she took with Albert and their family and friends. She especially treasured that these trips facilitated reconnecting with family and friends living elsewhere.

Vicki’s home was always a stopping-over place for visitors and, as many will attest, she always had the welcome mat out. Her homemade bread and buns were famous.  She was an avid gardener, first out of necessity to feed her family, and later taking pride in beautiful flower gardens around the property. Vicki especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends and kept in touch with all.

Vicki was a long-time member of the Bowsman Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Anglican Church Women.

She is survived, and will be greatly missed, by her children Jan, Garry (Tarry), and Terry (Laura) as well as nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Albert, her son Robert, granddaughter Deanie and son-in-law Stan as well as all of her siblings.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, May 25th, 2023 at 2:00 PM from the St. James Anglican Church with Pastor Bob Lewis officiating. Vicki was laid to rest in the Bowsman Cemetery following the funeral service.
