Bessie Alice Riehl (nee Bateman)

Born August 30, 1911, died March 26,2022

            Following a short illness, at the age of 110+  years Bessie passed away at the Swan Valley Personal Care Home, in Swan River , Manitoba, where she lived for the past 15+ years.

            Bessie is survived by one sister Daisy, and her three sons and one daughter and their families. Garth of Durban Mb. and his remaining children Richard, Kevin, and Lonny. Dennis and Marlene of Arnes Mb. and their children Rhonda, Bruce and Robert. Brian and Karen of Winnipeg Mb. and their children Monte and Jerral. Judith and Gary of Edmonton AB. and their children Andrea, Gareth, Jerrod and Justin, She is also survived by  13 grand children and 20+ great grand children and 2 great great  grandchildren.

            Bessie was born and raised at Durban, Manitoba and still referred to the farm one mile south of Durban as "Home" and in latter years made many references to going back to "the Land". Being older than her brothers, she had opportunity to do Farm work such as driving a four horse hitch on any of the many farm implements such as a "bucking pole" used for stacking hay. We enjoyed her many stories of adventure doing this type of pioneer work. 

            She married Clayton Riehl on October 26, 1933 and they farmed in the Ruby District until 1945 when they moved to Durban until she decided to take up residence in the Duck Mountain Lodge. In 2006. Bessie became a resident of  the Swan Valley Personal Care Home.

            Bessie was a strong, independent person, leaving many memories of home cooked meals, living off the land, and making the best of every situation. She will be missed.
