Sigurjona Sigridur (Sarah) Assoignon passed away on August 16th, 2016 at the age of 94 years.

Sarah was born in the RM of Swan River on section SE 20-36-29 W1 on November 30th, 1921 to Elin and Thordur Thomson She received her education at Crestview School.

During Sarah’s younger years, she played guitar with her sisters in a band.

Sarah married Gabriel Assoignon on January 26th, 1947, sadly he passed away on April 10th, 1998. During their life together they farmed in Whitebeech, where Sarah was a home maker. Sarah and Gibby hosted a new year’s day celebration at the family farm for 49 consecutive years, for many family and friends. Where there was always a ton of food to eat.

Hobbies for Sarah included raising farm animals, cooking, crocheting, knitting, and gardening; and all along she worked hard and never complained. The garden that Sarah would grow, which was a large one, she always shared with family and friends.

Sarah is survived by her daughters Louise (Les) of Swan River, Jennie (Pat) of Winnipeg and Linda also of Winnipeg; sons Gabriel of Whitebeech and Gerald (Debra) also of Whitebeech; as well as 11 granchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents Elin and Thordur; her husband Gabriel Sr.; sisters Inga and Dia; one grandson; one great-grandaughter and by her son-in-law Ted.

Evening visitation was held on August 19th, 2016 at 7:00 PM from the Chapel of Paull Funeral Home, Swan River, Manitoba.

Funeral service was held on August 20th, 2016 at 2:00 PM from St. Andrews United Church, Swan River, Manitoba with Reverend Dr. Jenny Sprong officiating.

Active pallbearers were Jeremie Assoignon, Rhyley Hrappstead, Leif Hrappstead, Trina Hrappstead, Lisa Trahan, and Jonathan Kotyk.

All of Sarah’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were to considered themselves as honorary pallbearers.

Following the service, Sarah was laid to rest in the Birchwood Cemetery, Swan River, Manitoba.
