Irene May Higgs of Bowsman, Manitoba passed away in Quathiaski Cove, B.C. on March 20th, 2015 at the age of 95 years.

Irene was born in Swan River on November 22, 1914 to Alex and Fannie Sutherland. She received her education in Bowsman, Manitoba.

Irene married John “Jack” Higgs in Bowsman, on July 28th, 1943. Sadly Jack passed away on October 4th, 2010.

During her life she worked and resided in Bowsman where she worked at Dynies Store, lived in Birch River, Flin Flon for the year 1949-1961 where she worked at the Flin Flon Co-op, she returned to Bowsman in 1961 where she resided till 2015. During that time she worked as a bookkeeper for John’s Service, a school bus driver, secretary and treasurer for the Bowsman Seniors for 32 years.

Irene had many interests in life from gardening, house plants, baking, senior gatherings, reading, watching sports on tv, bingo in the earlier years, and VLT’s later in the later years, she also enjoyed to entertain company.

Irene in survived by her five children Betty (Mel) Doak, Ross (Rhea), Allan (Donna), Shelley (Larry) Stevens, and Kevin (Donna); brother Ken Sutherland (Vi) of Bowsman; brother-in-law Bert Higgs; sister-in-law Debbie (Don), Elva (George), Mae (Cyril) and Beryl (Stan); seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her husband John; parents Alex and Fanny Sutherland; sister Florence (Conrad) Phillip; five brothers Alvin (Spike), Roy, Alexander (Dynie), Clarence and Don; and one foster brother David Oliver.

A funeral service was held on April 8th, 2015 from the Bowsman Legion Hall, Bowsman, Manitoba with Reverend Kathy Highmoor officiating.

Active urn bearers were Shelley Higgs and Kevin Higgs.

Following the service, Irene was laid to rest in the Bowsman Cemetery, Bowsman, Manitoba.
