Corey Michael Chartrand “Chink”

June 11, 1978 – June 7, 2016

Corey was born to Virginia and Michael Chartrand on June 11, 1978 at the Swan River Hospital. Corey grew up in Sapotaweyak most of his life. As a child he also lived in Durban seasonally when his late father was employed. During his childhood he attended Pelican Rapids School then he continued his education at Swan River. Corey was well known for playing minor hockey, square dancing with Flora Campeau memorial square dancers, he played football during high school and at home with his brothers, cousins and friends. He also played baseball with Swan River, SCN and P.R.C.C. fastball and travelled to many places. He was known for competing in professional jigging during SCN Treaty Days. Corey enjoyed spending time with his sisters, nieces and nephews and was often seen walking to visit them. Corey loved to play baseball, walk the dog, play games with his children. He enjoyed spending a lot of time with them. He always tried his best to help provide and support his family for he loved his children dearly.

Corey worked for Sapotaweyak as log house operator for a number of years, wood hauling project for a couple of years, and he was a fisherman in Pelican Bay for the last two years. He worked along side with his brothers and did the best he could. During the hunting season he would often call a loon while out with his brothers in Bell River. Corey enjoyed socializing, joking around, teasing, laughing and visiting with family and friends. He was happy, he lived his life the way he loved it.

Corey is survived by his common-law Erica and his children Thereon (Iona), Whitehawk (Shannen), Natashia, Corey Junior, Kyela and his baby boy Damien; Choomies Haven, Harlon, Thea and Erin; mother Virginia (Clifford) George; brothers Albert, Augustus (Brandy), Michael (Melissa), Stanley (Elizabeth), Kenward (Meranda), Earl (Delma), and Larry; sisters Geraldine, Tracy (Martin) Campeau, Rhonda (Frank), May (Brian) and baby sister Martina Chartrand; stepmom Adeline (Wayne); stepbrothers and sisters Harold Mink, Rosemary (Kirk), Prentice, Pamela (Delaney) Packo, and Sarah (Shane) Ducharme; Aunties Vitaline (Roderick) Sinclair, Velma (Frank) Campbell, Yvonne (Ernest) Muchikekewanape and Annabelle Tucker; uncles Martin (Dora), Edwin (Barb) Kematch and by numbers family and friends.

Corey was predeceased by his father Michael Chartrand; Paternal grandparents John Chartrand, Caroline Cook, Blennie (Joe) Genaille, Maria (William John) Audy, Albina (Renee) Cook, Clara (Howard) Cook and Ida (Roderick) Stevens; uncle Gilbert Chartrand; maternal grandparents Stanley (Grace) Kematch, and Maryanne Patchinose; uncles Peter Kematch, and Steve Kematch; niece Jessica Chartrand; nephew Fleury Beardy; cousin Patricia Kematch and best friend Walter Jr. Sinclair.

A wake service was held on Wednesday June 22nd, 2016 at 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Augustus and Brandy Chartrand’s residence, then proceeded to the Sapotaweyak Cree Nation Community Centre, Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, Manitoba.

Funeral service was held on Thursday June 23rd, 2016 at 2:00 PM from St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, Pelican Rapids, Manitoba with Father Roy George officiating.

Active pallbearers were Edwin Campeau, Nathan Cook, Matthew Cook, Chris (Chauch) Kematch, John D. Chartrand, Marcus Chartrand, Frank Houle, Danny Stevens, Sonny Campbell, Robert J. Stevens, Pearly Chartrand, Wallace Cook, Ernie Muchikekewanape, John (Chap) Audy, Frank Gott, Martin Kematch Jr., Whitehawk Leask, Thereon Leask, Cameron Sakawakoochin, Edwin Kematch and Anita Leask.

Honorary pallbearers were Cordell Sanderson, Tristen Kematch, Adam Stevens, Corbin Bourassa, Samuel Gott, Percy Genaille, Alec Leask, Rhonda Cook, Marcel Genaille, Frank Genaille and Elmer Leask.

Honor guards were Loretta Gott and Fred Stevens.

Following the service, Corey was laid to rest in the St. Theresa Roman Catholic Parish Cemetery, Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, Manitoba.
